Sympathy cards and flowers are the usual expressions of condolence, but in Apple TV+’s darkly comic thriller Sunny, grieving Suzie (Rashida Jones) is given a cute robot that she is told will offer her comfort.
Suzie is an American living in Kyoto, Japan, who is coming to terms with the devastating realisation that her husband, Masa (Hidetoshi Nishijima), and son are dead after they disappeared in a mysterious plane crash. Then Masa’s enigmatic colleague Yuki (Jun Kunimura) turns up with his unusual gift.
Sunny (voiced by Joanna Sotomura) is a ‘homebot’ that her husband programmed for her. This is news to Suzie, who thought he worked in refrigeration!
