Around 700 million years ago, life on our planet was changed for ever due to a cataclysmic freeze that held the globe in an icy grip.
In this week's episode of Earth, Chris Packham explores how tectonic plates began to shift and created rifts in the Earth's crust, which led to carbon dioxide being sucked out of the atmosphere, causing temperatures to drop to -70&deg;C.
'It flipped Earth's thermostat to chill,' says Chris. 'The planet almost completely froze and it's thought it went all the way&nbsp;down to the equator, where there's evidence of glacier activity. Ice claimed the world.' At the same time, microscopic life was developing underwater, but the deep-freeze event threatened its survival.
Story of resilience
'When everything started freezing, it pretty much put paid to complex life,' explains Chris. 'This disaster hit just as the earliest forms of animal&nbsp;life were evolving.'
The freeze lasted 50 million years until volcanic eruptions caused carbon dioxide to be released once more. As temperatures rose, the ice thawed, and life re-emerged and diversified, paving the way for bigger species to evolve.
'Life had to survive under those conditions, then pop back out,' reveals Chris. 'It's a story of resilience because this catastrophe led to new life on Earth that thrived.'
