America is home to the world's largest female prison population, where one in 25 women locked up is pregnant.
In some of the strictest prisons, inmates are even shackled in leg irons while giving birth.
For the first episode of her new five-part series, Katie Piper is at Cobb County jail in Georgia, home to women awaiting trial for everything from shoplifting to murder.
There, she meets 29-yearold Eve, whose newborn son was taken away after just a day, and Shakeara, who's five months' pregnant and charged with armed robbery.
'I'm going to break down when I leave that hospital and I can't take my baby with me - I'm crying just thinking about it,' explains Shakeara, 23. 'I'm going to miss a couple of months of his life, but I'm going to promise him I won't miss any more.
Katie also learns that if inmates don't have anyone to look after their newborns, they're taken into care.
'The trauma these women face is heartbreaking,' says Katie. 'Of course you have to think about the victims behind these people's crimes.
But the children are the real losers.'
