The northern bald ibis was hunted to extinction in Europe, but, in Austria, conservationist Katharina Huchler is helping to reintroduce this rare species. And as foster mother to 28 chicks, she not only spends all day with them and feeds them, but she also takes to the skies!
Katharina is one of the conservation heroes featured in this week's final episode. We also see a team saving black rhinos in South Africa, a breeding programme for harlequin frogs in Ecuador and the battle to protect elephants from poachers in C&ocirc;te d'Ivoire.
The biggest challenge for Katharina is teaching the young birds how to migrate to warmer climes in autumn, something they would learn from their adult peers.
'They know they need to go somewhere,' says Katharina. 'But they don't know in which direction, and how far!'
To show them the way, Katharina takes off in a tiny microlight, and encourages her flock to follow by calling to them through a loudhailer. It's a journey that takes them up and over the Alps to a nature reserve in Italy.
'What we're trying to do, apart from saving the ibis, is give hope to people,' she says. 'If you can bring back one species, you can do it with others!'
