Stepping into Sabyasachi Mukherjee's world of beauty gives a clear impression of his fondness for India's traditions and rich heritage, be it in the form of kohl-rimmed eyes, gajra-adorned bun, red lip, or even the Bengali red bindi. This fondness is what reflects in his latest collaboration with Estée Lauder - a range of everyday staple lipstick shades. For some, this make-up launch might be unexpected, but Mukherjee knew he wanted to venture into the beauty industry 20 years back, which is one of the reasons he never wavered from the beauty image he portrayed to the world, he reveals.
We sit down with the multi-hyphenate to discuss his relationship with beauty, choosing classics over trends, the prominence of red in his life, and what went behind creating a range that reflects Indian identity.
