A NEW CHAPTER IN JAIPUR’S CULTURAL LEGACY
Known for its stunning architecture, vibrant textiles, and centuries-old craftsmanship, Jaipur is on the cusp of a new cultural milestone. Set to open its doors in November 2024, the Jaipur Centre for Art (JCA) will be housed in the historic City Palace, blending the grandeur of Jaipur’s past with the innovation of contemporary art.
The idea behind JCA is the brainchild of HH Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh of Jaipur and Noelle Kadar, a globally experienced contemporary art specialist. Together, they envision it is a space that positions Jaipur at the forefront of both India’s and the world’s art scene. “Our goal is to bring Jaipur into global contemporary art discourse, showcasing the city’s unique perspective where tradition and modernity converge,” says Kadar.
The 2,600 sq ft exhibition space will be dedicated to hosting Indian and international artists, with the intention of fostering cross-cultural exchange. They hope to highlight the lesser-known role of Jaipur as a cultural hub for contemporary art, beyond its identity as a centre for jewellery and craftsmanship.
BLENDING HERITAGE WITH CONTEMPORARY ART
According to HH Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh, JCA is about ensuring that heritage spaces continue to evolve, becoming “living monuments of creativity and inspiration”. The exhibitions will be curated in dialogue with Jaipur’s historical archives, encouraging interaction between the contemporary works and the city’s rich cultural past.
