GLOSSPELL: SCENT & SENSIBILITY

The inherent desire to smell good every hour of the day is linked to how scents trigger a release of dopamine, the T feel-good hormone, from our body. Today, the fragrance landscape is one of the most, if not the most, sought-after industries in the world of beauty. In the past few months, however, a niche category under fragrances has caught everyone's attention on social media. Meet hair mists, the scented perfumes that are specially made for your tresses.

One of the very first hair mists that created a consumer demand for this category was Gisou's honey-scented hair perfume. Sol de Janeiro's hair and body mist is another one of the OG hair perfumes loved by celebrities and online personalities. Recently, Rare Beauty has also come up with an earthy body and hair mist, while homegrown brand Fix My Curls has dropped three varieties of alcohol-free hair mist. The hair perfume industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5 per cent from 2024 to 2030, and it was estimated at USD 8.26 billion in 2023, begging the question: What is making this micro-category grow and expand at a staggering rate in the increasingly cut-throat beauty market?
