Poona, or Pune, is a flourishing city, situated at the intersection of the Mula and Mutha rivers. It is referred to as the "Queen of the Deccan" due to its cultural significance to the Maratha people. It is a city famous for its educational institutions, and its theatre, and arts and crafts.
It is also known for the magnificent Aga Khan Palace, constructed in 1892, which is now a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, as his ashes are preserved in the palace garden. Over the past 20 years, Pune has experienced tremendous growth, largely thanks to its thriving IT, education, and manufacturing sectors.
"The booming IT, education and manufacturing sectors have given Pune its due and have put it on the path of exponential growth," says Dr Saurabh Gadgil, PNG Jewellers, Pune. "As a cosmopolitan city, Pune has become a popular choice for young people looking for a place to call home. Today, the city is almost like a metro. With its proximity to Mumbai, and its constantly evolving infrastructure, Pune is fast becoming a great place to live as well as work," he adds.
PUNE'S FLOURISHING JEWELLERY MARKET
The influx of young professionals has significantly impacted the jewellery market of Pune. "Due to the growing IT industry, the population of Pune is increasing. This new IT crowd comes with higher salaries, which has led to family jewellers expanding from one showroom to three or four showrooms. As a result, business has gone up, thanks to the increasing crowd and expanding infrastructure," explains Sanjay Rathod, Rathod Jewellers, Pune.
