The Grammy Submitted singer is one of the few artists in today's landscape to traverse intensely expressive songwriting, alongside chill, contemporary sounds; much like her cross-genre palette of Punjabi, Sufi, Ghazal and Folk music presented with western, contemporary production éléments
Experts from Devika's interview with Seema Dhawan
Can you tell me about the process and making of Dil Tenu?
It came from a deep sort of inspiration and feeling. I had met a lot of people who had lost somebody whom they loved. Their sadness moved me so deep. It was constantly on my mind. So one day when I was in my music room playing with some notes on the keyboard, the song revealed itself in the form of a dialogue with the one you loved, the one who left you. Instantly a melody came to me - lyrics followed. Immediately I got my laptop and started humming and recording, (whatever came to mind). I think that was the start of it. And then I built it over the next few weeks, I worked with a producer in Mumbai, Jayhaan of Desi Jersey Club, and collaborated remotely to produce it.
Tell us about your journey and evolution in this industry, how did you get into singing?
I just wanted to sing when I was a kid. I came back from school one day and told my mom I wanted to sing. I just had this inner desire to learn music. My mom would take me for Hindustani music lessons. And this is how I got into Music.
