There is always an eery, nervous silence that fills a room of students prior to a test or exam. It was no different for the students competing in the BASC and Highland Game Colleges' Cookery Competition recently. Hours of trials and preparation would all boil down to 90 minutes in a kitchen.
Top five
The five young students in the room had already been whittled down from 70 entrants. They had showcased their aptitude for creating an original venison dish. Their brief on the day was to create a canapé that would woo the heavyweight line-up of judges and eventually be served to 250 guests at the Eat Game Awards in March.
Entrants to this year's competition came from across the UK; the final five were students from colleges in Gloucester, Bristol, Blackpool and London.
