CAASA AGM and AWARDS

At just after 10h00 the meeting was opened by CAASA president Johan Nel who welcomed the important visitors from the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and in particular Ms Poppy Khoza as well as several other aviation organisations all in some way or another involved in sectors of Southern African Aviation. Johan briefly outlined the present state of CAASA as far as its membership and sustainability post the pandemic, which I am happy to report looks excellent due to the sacrifices made by many individual including the staff members of CAASA. CAASA board member in charge of finances Rampa Rammopo presented the financial report which echoed the president's CAASA sustainability picture. Rampa took over from John Morrisson who had been responsible of CAASA's financial matters for many years.

Rampa's illustrated presentation clearly indicated that this most important professional aviation body was clearly on the road to recovery after the pandemic which resulted in a complete year of no income from the cancelled African Aerospace and Defence 2020 (AAD2020) exhibition and airshow. Nakedi Pasha, exhibition director of AAD was the next speaker and she presented an excellent outline of the opportunities for CAASA members to exhibit at AAD2024 in September this year. I was impressed with her presentation that clearly showed that AAD's partners including Armscor, AMD, CAASA as well as associated entities such as the Department of Defence, Tshwane Metropolitan Council and the South African government were already fully committed to a successful exhibition.

Maputo airshow 2024 What a treat!

On Sunday 16 June Christine and I returned from attending the Maputo airshow and what a fantastic experience this was not only for estimated 15 000 spectators, but also the members of the media present. As always Brian Emmenis and his team were on top form with a great selection of music. The grand finale with the Puma Energy Flying Lions T6 Harvards was simply beautiful and I saw several spectators with tears in their eyes as they expressed their happiness for the airshow.

Single-pilot operations and lemon juice

Psychology researchers have found that some of the dumbest criminals and the cockiest pilots may have something in common: a hazardous cognitive bias, the Dunning–Kruger effect that hinders self-perception, clouds judgment and leads individuals to overestimate their ability. However, new psychological discoveries may provide a cure.
