Normally, the mention of happy hours Nconjures up images of drunken revelry, thanks to the discounts offered on drinks and snacks during these hours by bars and restaurants or other such licensed establishments that sell alcoholic beverages. Thus, these two innocuous words became casualty to not a very welcome kind of stereotyping, when you realize such beverages end up doing more harm to the society than doing good.
Though these two words together also appeared in Shakespeare’s King Henry V, the ‘happy hour’ as a reference to a scheduled period of entertainment seems to have originated in the US Navy in Arkansas. In the year 1913, a group of home makers called “happy hour social” organized “semi-weekly smokers” onboard the battleship USS Arkansas.
We all know that despite the statutory warnings visibly labelled on the bottles, the consumption of alcohol is not showing any downward trend across the world.
Perhaps it’s time we disassociated the word “happy hours” from drinking alcoholic beverages by introducing real “happy hours” that are healthy for the mind, body and soul.
The world could do well by introducing a few free offers or discounts to encourage such healthy practices, a few of which are highlighted below:
