Generally, when one thinks about a Yogi, the popular idea is that this is a strange person having some powers. Now, Yogis need not show that they are Yogis. They need not have any special external appearance, they may look ordinary. It is likely that from an early age on, they were interested in understanding more about themselves, about life, and kept that interest up. Some incidents may have taken place in their life and altered their thinking. Some kind of change may have occurred in their personality, their values and approach. These individuals recognize the limitations of material life and consistently persist in understanding the truth, understanding what is real. And as they pass through life, they read, share thoughts, visit people, practice some self-control. Some transformations start, and over time, they plunge themselves into a non-materialistic kind of life. But all this may happen without them claiming anything.
