I was married at 19, while still in college. With dreams in my eyes, I went to Delhi. I did so want to be a Professor of English. But that was not to be. With two little boys by the time was I was 24, I remember we had gone to Kashmir, Jannat, for a holiday. And this is where I started believing in serendipity. Destiny. Kismet.&nbsp;Call it what you may. One morning just like that my husband and I read an interesting article in the newspaper about The Yoga Institute. "Hey, did you know, Bombay girl, this Yoga Institute exists in Bombay in Santa Cruz?" my husband remarked. I pleaded ignorance.&nbsp;Subsequently, into my hands came a book on Asanas left by the previous occupant of the hotel room in the writing table drawer. Lo and behold you can guess by whom it had been written!
Next summer break, as was our usual pattern, I landed with my children at my parental home in Bombay. Nani was too happy. She got her precious time with her grandchildren. And I, instead of going out shopping or for lunches with my friends, found my way to The Yoga Institute. I stood outside for a long time, staring at the building and with great trepidation but then I opened the gate and walked up to the office.
And guess what happened next? Mother was standing at the reception. She had the kindest smile! I was transfixed. Next, I was taken into her warm loving arms, as though she had been waiting for me.
She guided me lovingly to join the 21-Days Better Living Course. There were some ten of us in the class and I fell in love with yoga. Subsequently, I met a gorgeous young woman, Smt. Hansaji. Dr.&nbsp;Jayadeva became my teacher in the Teachers Training Course. And, finally, the Grand Old Man of Yoga, Shri Yogendraji, with a naughty twinkle in his eyes. It was a total joy meeting a family so dedicated to Yoga.
Little did I know then that one day I would start teaching yoga in Delhi in various embassies and in The American Embassy School and become one of the most popular and sought after teachers and go on to write a book, "The Joys of Yoga." It was in 1989. I had come a long way from Kashmir to Bombay to Delhi. Years, decades have gone by. Thank you, Yoga Institute and a Very Happy Birthday, Hansaji. You are as gorgeous as ever!
