Writing in the journal Nature, an international team of scientists led by Franck Guy (University of Poitiers, France) describes a femur and two ulnae (arm) bones that were excavated from geological deposits in Chad in 2001. They say the leg bone indicates "habitual bipedality" on the ground while the arms indicate the creature also spent a fair amount of time in trees engaged in "arboreal clambering."
The age of S. tchadensis has been put at seven million years. This would make it the earliest known member of the hominid lineage. Still, the hominid fossil record is sparse and with every new find and every new claim comes considerable controversy. Some are not convinced the femur shows clear evidence of bipedalism and say it's more likely the bone of an ape. Still, everyone recognizes the importance of these rare and precious remains from so early in the hominid family tree and are glad to see them getting studied and discussed some 20 years: years after being tucked away in a university cabinet.
