COOL, CALM COLLECTIVE

Stylesetters in their own right, mother and daughter team Barb and Alexandra Brownlow of Brownlow Interior Design bring a classic sensibility to residential projects from their South Yarra studio and store filled with luxe lighting, furniture, rugs, textiles and art.

WHAT WERE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUR SPACE AND WHAT INITIALLY APPEALED ABOUT THE SITE? AB After 13 years on Mathoura Road, Toorak, we were searching for a larger space in which to expand our design studio and showroom. After looking for more than six months at dilapidated shops up and down Malvern Road, a small ‘For Lease’ sign appeared on the prettiest building in South Yarra. Artvisory were moving into larger premises so we pounced. Soaring ceilings, beautiful windows with an enfilade of rooms were just what we needed.

WHAT WAS THE DESIGN CONCEPT FOR THE STORE’S INTERIORS? Creating a design language for the space began with the ‘Florence’ chinoiserie wallpaper painted by Diane Hill for Harlequin and available from Domestic Textile. We wanted to show a traditional scenic design that was relatively affordable and this offered a wonderful colour palette. Our showroom has a salon feel, very private but very welcoming. With an ever-changing inventory of antiques, objets d’art and unique upholstered pieces, the interior has a collected feel, a sense of permanence which is our trademark.
