<p>It was probably never about maximalism at his flagship store in Kala Ghoda. "Bhalo legeche, tai," says Sabyasachi Mukherjee summarising the why and how of putting his vision to life. Loosely translating to, 'I like it, that's why' the Bengali phrase encapsulates the nonchalant poise that is quintessential to the land of mishti and maach. "The store is full of things. Some are very expensive, some have absolutely no consequences, some are just funny. You see, Bengalis are sentimental hoarders... we assign value to sentiments.&nbsp;There is a casualness about the way Bengalis keep their wealth, it's charming because it's detached and that was the entire idea of the store. When we like something, we have the intellectual wisdom to assign value to it. The onlooker doesn't have to like it, and that's confidence. "We built this space like that," he asserts. And it emulates the Bengali home in spirit with a whiff of an old world nostalgia. "I wanted to create experiences that felt like my home. Which has the kind of tea I like to drink and serve. The showcase and antiquities, the playlist, the music, the smell, the decor. I created the store so that the customer would feel closer to my world without having to actively meet me," he adds.</p>

<p>His world, as he puts it, is emblematic of the country's heritage and a point of view that is authentically Indian. It sprawls over 25,862 sq ft within the CP Fort Heritage Building in Mumbai, a Grade II A heritage structure. From the start, the virtuoso was clear that he wanted to create his world in the heritage precinct of Bombay, "and not Bandra Kurla Complex," he laughs! This property was the first shown to Sabyasachi and it fit. "I didn't want to look further. It was close to Horniman Circle and Asiatic library. There are such beautiful buildings, it was just the right move," he says.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And within what he calls the beautiful historic building, he has brought to life archives of a glorious past, some of which are older than the building and the colonisers who built it. It houses age-old Tanjore paintings, Pichhwais in the Deccan, Nathdwara and Kota style, Mughal miniatures, rare bronzes, 19th century Company Paintings and rare lithographs in the company of 100 chandeliers, 275 carpets, 3,000 books and 150 works of art created by the Sabyasachi Foundation. He makes a simple point, &ldquo;Why are people going to buy luxury that is handicraft if you&rsquo;re not going to expose them to the lifestyle of luxury that is handcrafted?&rdquo;</p>

<p>Beyond the craft and heritage, his space is a collection of memories and sepia tinted inspirations. For instance, he&rsquo;s a teetotaller but his idea of decor comes from bars. In his words, he says, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m fascinated by the way they stock their bottles. Big bottles, small bottles, I like the rhythm and multiplicity of things. Stacking and repeating. Thousands of things. But the excess isn&rsquo;t intimidating.&rdquo; And that&rsquo;s when the pieces fall in place, method to the madness becomes evident. The casual composure, a confidence that puts the onlooker at ease. Maximalism (an adjective that&rsquo;s widely doing the rounds) stems from sheer joy and love of beauty.</p>
