Open up to new POSSIBILITIES

Double up with an indoor/outdoor kitchen.

The accordion-style NanaWall (nanawall.com) between the terrace and the kitchen is "the showpiece of the house," says DiClerico. With the help of Bo Lee Architects, DiClerico renovated his Brooklyn, NY, home over the course of 18 months. The floor-to-ceiling glass door/window system lets natural light pour into the space.

SUPER SURFACES

by Dan DiClerico, Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab Director

The flooring of any outdoor space has a major impact on its look and performance. Here are three alternatives to traditional wood decking.

1. EASY UPKEEP: COMPOSITE

Composite decking is the low-maintenance way to go. The latest versions are often indistinguishable from real wood, and they never need to be refinished! GH Lab Pick: TimberTech Azek Landmark Collection, $6.50 per linear foot, timbertech.com

2. VERSATILE DESIGN: PORCELAIN

Porcelain works both indoors and outdoors, making it perfect for so-called "transition rooms." Exterior tiles have a slip-resistant finish.
