My parents had enjoyed an anniversary celebration at Ashford Castle, so even before I arrived I knew I wouldn't be disappointed based on their experience, however, my time spent here definitely exceeded my expectations. You can't fail to be impressed by the luxurious surroundings, but for me it was the level of hospitality and the friendly staff that really set it apart.
On arrival we were greeted with a gin toddy while we got checked in. With our bags already on their way, we then headed to our room to get settled in and refresh after a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Bangor in Co. Down.
Our home for the next few days was a beautifully decorated suite with two luxurious bathrooms and a lounge area separate from the bedroom. A bottle of Champagne was waiting for us along with some sweet treats, which we took the time to enjoy while deciding what we were going to do next.
We decided to dine that evening in the village of Cong and take the opportunity to visit The Quiet Man pub famed for the 1952 film of the same name starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara - after all we couldn't come all this way and not do this! It is only a few minutes walk into this scenic village, where you can explore the ruins of the 12th century Abbey, walk the 2.3km Cong Nature Trail and visit the Quiet Man Museum situated in a pretty thatch-roof cottage.
