A long-standing passion for textiles was the root inspiration for David Housego and his wife Mandeep Nagi, which led to the launch of 'Shades of India', about 25 years ago. This lifestyle brand celebrates the rich and diverse legacy of hand-crafted textile traditions of India, with products ranging from apparel and accessories to soft furnishings for the home. The duo are renowned connoisseurs of textiles and have recently presented an exhibition of their private collections and archives of textiles, titled 'Bukhara'. Held last month at the National Crafts Museum in New Delhi, the exhibition featured suzani hangings, beshir rugs, antique carpets and ikats, that were unique to Central Asia in the 19th century. "My love for textiles started from Iran from where I collected antique tribal rugs while working as a journalist", says David Housego, Chairman, Shades of India- who was the South Asia Correspondent for the Financial Times and before that, the paper's Bureau Chief in Paris. Mandeep and he are avid admirers of Indian crafts and textiles, and he tells us, "Our creative partnership sparked with the mutual admiration for textiles and crafts from around the world. The approach to each collection is branched out of celebrating a craft or a technique in a contemporary, yet rooted way."

Mandeep is the Design Director at Shades of India and she tells us, "Textiles have always been my passion.&nbsp;I can still remember first discovering the beauty of my&nbsp;mother's sarees, as a child. I secretly opened a big metal box she stored them in and tried on one after the other. I marvelled at the Banarasi silks and cotton khadi sarees, at their texture, feel and delicate patterns. I was too young to know that I would live and breathe textiles for the rest of my life. I feel fortunate to be Indian and to inherit this vast legacy of fabrics, techniques and designs that is unique to our country." Since the founding of Shades of India, the couple have travelled across the country to identify and work with various crafts, textiles, and embroidery cooperatives.

One of the strengths at Shades of India is that they can bring together three or four different hand-crafted techniques on the same piece. For example, they can combine printing or foiling with fabric manipulation, different elements of embroidery and fine detailing, like a button in crochet work or a tie finished with a hand worked tassel. Shades of India now has a new store in Khan Market in New Delhi and as their exhibition 'Bukhara' received an overwhelming reponse, the couple plan to take it to other cities as well.
