Most of us take an eclectic approach, mixing handed-down furniture and comfortable pieces with the occasional splurge. Spare, mid-century chairs can play well in a room dripping with ornamental plaster, for example. Furniture complements a room by virtue of its proportion, shape, material, and fabric pattern. Matching period is of course a shortcut to a good fit: Hepplewhite furniture in a Federal house, furniture designed by C.F.A. Voysey for a Tudor, as examples.
