FROM DRAB TO FAB

When I stumbled upon a solid wood, three-drawer dresser for just R50 at a garage sale, I knew it had potential.

FROM DRAB TO FAB

With a bit of work, I turned this budget find into a polished, stylish piece that blends perfectly with my home office. Here's the step-by-step process to help you restore your own treasure!

What you will need

• Wood filler

• Sandpaper (80, 120, 180, 220, and 400 grit)

• Degreaser/cleaner (I used The Pink Stuff)

• Lint-free towels or blue shop towels

• Primer

• Paint (colour of your choice)

• Paintbrush

• High-quality foam roller

• Optional: paint blocker/sealer

• New legs and hardware (pulls)

• Drill

Step-by-step guide

Step 1: Find your project piece

First, hunt for a budget-friendly dresser made from solid wood. Avoid MDF pieces, as they're harder to restore and less durable. I found mine for just R50, but check second-hand stores, garage sales, or online marketplaces for deals.

Step 2: Deep clean the dresser

Start by thoroughly cleaning your dresser. Use a degreaser or all-purpose cleaner like to remove dirt, grime, and oils from the surface. Wipe it down with lint-free towels (blue shop towels work great) to avoid leaving fibres behind. A clean surface is essential for a smooth restoration process.

Step 3: Fill imperfections
