Chicago has justifiably earned its reputation as an architectural marvel. The city boasts some of the most iconic skyscrapers and a skyline that reflects decades of exploration by renowned architects.
For interior designer Jessica Lagrange, though, the architecture that fascinates her most nestles in the historic neighborhoods and districts. Vintage rowhouses and elegant greystones speak her language. "Classic historic buildings are so welcoming and warm," she says.
As such, the designer was in her element putting her touch on an 1896 greystone in the tree-lined Gold Coast neighborhood near the Lake Michigan shoreline. In fact, she had a kindred connection. Not only were the homeowners repeat clients, she was already quite familiar with the greystone and its former owner-all part of her circle of friends who share an appreciation for historic properties.
The greystone had previously undergone a top-to-bottom renovation that restored classic millwork and features that had been stripped from the 8,000-square-foot home. This renovation, which brought architect Steve Rugo into the fold, was less extensive yet still dramatic. "The owners loved the bones of the house," Lagrange says. "They're traditionalists, but we wanted a fresh take on traditional."
A notable exception to the "less extensive" scope-and the masterstroke-took place on the fourth floor. A ballroom that sat idle (sans for a period it was turned into apartments) presented a rare and wonderful opportunity to create the ultimate entertaining space: a swanky and sexy cocktail lounge.
