For the living space
SHINE A LIGHT
When it comes to the latest lighting trends, look to Denmark, the masters of hygge.
"Nobody masters winter lighting quite like the Scandinavians," says Phil Paterson, founder of lighting brand Capsuhl. "They favour low-level, ambient lighting solutions such as wall lights or lamps, eschewing harsh central or downlighting. It's essential to choose lighting with a warm hue, reminiscent of a fire or sunset, which naturally helps us unwind and relax." Phil recommends integrated LED technology over traditional bulbs, which are not only compact and durable but provide superior light quality.
PARTY PARLOUR
Make entertaining easy When it becomes too cold to leave your home, it's time to invite other people to yours. Creating an environment that optimises seating and is conducive to cosy companionship is key. Ottomans are a great investment and it's even better if they've got a built-in storage compartment for blankets. Whip it out at a moment's notice for a place to put the cheese platter, as footrests for movie night or extra seating for those notorious board game evenings.
CURTAIN CALL
Switch out your curtains When it comes to soft furnishings, look for thickness and fullness, swapping out your wafty summer sheers. Velvet is trending for curtains, while honeycomb blinds are perfect for the bedroom. "Absolutely always take curtains to the floor," says Cherie Liddell, a style consultant at Russells Curtains.
"This cuts off the 'reverse chimney' cycle of cold air dropping down under the windowsill and traps the cold air against the window and wall." If budget allows, she advises finding a pleat style that creates a higher fullness in your curtains, lending an elegant and opulent look to a room.
