“STAND-UP COMEDY has saved my life”—that is the singular and most vital perspective from which to consider, and LOL at any joke you receive from Rishi Budhrani. In his hands, humour isn’t just knee-slapping entertaining. Its levity carries a truth-telling light that illuminates the daily dramas that compose your lived experience, especially if you are Singaporean.
On the cusp of his forthcoming and experimental production—an ode to his tailor father—and with his ingeniously christened merchandising brand Artificial Indian (AI) poised for a full reveal, the career comedian and performer issues a spirited reminder on why laughter, whose beating heart is authenticity, is the best medicine.
How has the year been for you, so far?
In all frankness, much of the year has been devoted to fitness pursuits. Along with the comedy and theatre, I’ve been playing a lot of football, which has helped reconnect me to my roots and remind myself of who I am. Showbiz can sometimes become so overwhelming and encapsulating that you can lose yourself and forget who you are. I’m a heartland Bedok South boy. Football took me to different places in the country when I was a kid.
Also, at 40, I’ve become a Mizunosponsored athlete. A brand sponsoring a comedian? It’s unheard of. It’s given me a bit of a refreshed take. I’ve become more introspective and involved in getting reacquainted with myself.
Let’s talk about the show. Will it be a complete re-staging or an update of the 2022 one?
