LUTHANDO 'BU' MTHEMBU is a rising star in South Africa's entertainment scene, seamlessly blending his talents as an actor, musician and reality TV personality. Born in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal, Mthembu first gained public attention during his time on Big Brother Mzansi in 2022, where his charisma made him a fan favourite despite an early eviction.
This experience propelled him into a thriving acting career, with his role as Vuyani in the Showmax hit series Adulting marking a major breakthrough. Known for his ability to portray deeply layered and often flawed characters, Mthembu has quickly established himself as a versatile actor, resonating with audiences through his authentic performances.
In addition to his acting career, BU is also pursuing his passion for music, with singles like "Stay Alive" being a massive hit. Boasting a growing presence on social media, he continues to captivate fans, balancing his artistic ventures while steadily building a name for himself.
His effortless style and talent have also earned him media recognition, including GQ's 2023 Best Dressed On Screen Personality.
How has your journey in entertainment shaped your view on fame and personal growth?
I always viewed fame as this beautiful facade that only a few can ascertain. Now that I've received it and been in the kitchen, so to say, I now know it's all smoke and mirrors, glitz and glam on the outside. But, back in there's a lot of work and intentional manoeuvring that takes place. That's what I'm learning-fame is just a tool. On the outside, it looks great to those that don't have it, but once you have it, you have to make sure that it doesn't swallow you up, because it's like a drug.
