Laura Mercier has always been an artist at heart. Leaving paintbrushes for make-up brushes, Laura launched her eponymous label in 1996. She has now forayed into India. Her brand has become synonymous with with high-quality products that enhance, rather than mask, individual beauty. The brand's commitment to inclusivity is evident in its diverse hues that ensure people of all skin tones can find products that cater to their unique beauty needs. Laura says she still stands by her philosophy-what makes you unique makes you beautiful. Here's more from our interesting conversation:
Harper's Bazaar: You began your career as a make-up artist before launching your brand. Could you please take us through your journey.
Laura Mercier: Well, it's a long story, but I'm going to make it short (laughs). I wanted to be an artist, and so I went to an art school in Paris, and then right after that, I went to an aesthetic school because I was also interested in the beauty world. The art and aesthetic background was perfect for me to start a career in make-up. I was the assistant of a famous make-up artist. And after that I was on my own. I worked for three years in France, and then I moved to New York City with the team of a famous French magazine. I decided to stay on and I have stayed back for 40 years (laughs). That's basically where I built my entire career. In 1996, I decided to launch my own make-up line with some financial partners.
HB: What are your earliest memories of make-up and how have they shaped your brand?
