Imagining a world without one of Tina’s biggest hits, ‘What’s Love Go To Do With It’ is almost unfathomable – but it would take one determined Australian music executive to make it happen.
Producer Roger Davies had the foresight to take the track, originally recorded by British group Bucks Fizz, and turn it into a bona fide hit for Tina.
Originally the singer had no interest in the “terrible” track, confessing: “I was rock’n’roll … that was a pop song.”
At the time, Tina was amid a critical turning point in her career following her tumultuous split from Ike Turner. After much negotiation, Melbourne-born Roger, who was just 26, finally managed to get Tina into the studio. The rest, as they say, is history
