It was the news that shocked showbiz - one of its most enduring, publicly devoted couples had called it quits.

Beloved Aussies Hugh Jackman and Deborra-lee Furness announced on September 15 that they were separating after 27 years of marriage.

"We have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth," the couple said in a statement. "We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness."

Speaking exclusively to New Idea, one of Hugh's best friends for more than three decades says, "I do think their relationship changed over the so passionate at the start but years. It was then kids, life and everything else happens."

Fortunately, with their children now adults son Oscar is 23 years old, and daughter Ava turned 18 in July - they've spared themselves any custody trauma.

And as the friend reveals, while things may be tough, there's reason to be hopeful for both Deb, 67, and Hugh, 54.
