Walking through the deserted cells of New South Wales’ Maitland Gaol, ghost hunters Anne Rzechowicz and Renata Daniel are at ease, entering the prison with a cheery “hello, boys.”
While the cells appear empty, the prison – which opened in 1848, closed in 1998 and once housed hundreds of inmates, including Ivan Milat – is now the playground of numerous ghosts.
“The ghosts here know us,” explains Anne, owner of Oz Para Tech, Australia’s number one supplier of paranormal equipment.
“They’re very cheeky,” adds Renata, who’s been running ghost tours for 13 years and providing tarot card readings for 30 years.
