The smell of smoke hangs in the air and inevitably the siren sounds, summoning the army of dedicated Monash Country Fire Service volunteers to the station. Local Colleen Telfer used to watch the trucks from her general store over the road, but these days she's likely the one behind the wheel.
"I'd never been interested in the CFS or had any family involved in it but seeing the truck go out and chatting to the boys at the shop after a fire, I thought I'd volunteer," Colleen, 52, tells New Idea.
