FROM PIXELS TO PEACE

In the digital age, where screens dominate our daily lives, the concept of a 'digital detox' has gained significant traction. However, it doesn't necessarily mean bidding farewell to technology altogether.

FROM PIXELS TO PEACE

We have never been more connected, yet paradoxically disconnected. We have information at our fingertips,

can email on the go, and video call our friends and family around the globe; but it still seems we often miss the world around us. This surge in screen time, driven by the prevalence of smartphones, social media, and various digital platforms, has raised concerns about its impact on both physical and mental health.

Numerous studies, including research published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology and the Psychology of Popular Media Culture, have identified a correlation between increased screen time and heightened stress levels, disrupted sleep patterns, and resulting in an overall decline in well-being. And with approximately 91.7 per cent of Malaysian residents being social media users, 96.8 per cent having internet access, and 129.1 per cent of the population having active phone connections, the ramifications are considerable.

Embarking on a partial ‘digital detox’ can yield a multitude of mental health benefits. By consciously stepping back from constant notifications and the pressure to stay online, one creates a mental space that can alleviate stress and anxiety. Moreover, reducing screen time fosters better face-to-face interactions, nurturing personal relationships and promoting emotional connections.

Integrating a partial digital detox into one’s daily life involves adopting simple yet effective practices. Designating specific times for tech-free moments, moderating social media use (something you can easily automate), and establishing tech-free zones at home, are all practical and easily implemented steps toward building a healthier relationship with technology.
