PRESTIGE 4О under 40

Kim May Chee, 30

CEO and Founder, Cocodry

NURTURING CONFIDENCE

A benevolent soul on a mission to empower women, Kim May Chee founded Malaysia's first blow-dry bar: Cocodry. First opening its doors in 2019, Cocodry currently has three locations throughout the Klang Valley. The business focuses on blowouts and natural scalp and hair treatments, becoming the premier destination for beautifying locks and boosting self-esteem for all special occasions.

"Trust the process are the words I've always lived by," Kim mentions. Cocodry's unusual business name comes with a story: Kim admits that Steve Jobs' fondness of Apple was a source of inspiration, but she wanted more than a quirky moniker. "While brainstorming, I knew I wanted something with a strong message behind it. When it comes to this business, it's not just about hair care services but about making women feel good. The "Co" in "Coco" invites women to feel confident."

The brand has engaged in various initiatives to benefit the community. Among them was the white flag movement geared towards helping Malaysians struggling from a loss of income due to the pandemic and engaging with causes to raise funds for the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) to provide education, care, and support services for those affected by cancer. In October 2022, Cocodry invited breast cancer survivors to recover confidence through a makeover and pampering session.

"Every single challenge that you go through makes you the strong person that you are," Kim shares, describing her work as a "never-ending marathon". Her goal is to one day be able to invest funds into women-founded businesses. Kim is also a mentor in the WOMEN:girls' Kejar Kerja initiative, a programme to impact and empower young women. "I'm nervous because being a mentor is a significant role. I hope to serve the community well."
