<p>But a team of blind and visually impaired women in India is working to make breast cancer detection more accessible. Since 2018, the New Delhi-based National Association of the Blind India Centre for Blind Women and Disability Studies (NABCBW) has been training visually impaired women to utilize their strong touch sensitivity to conduct detailed breast examinations and identify irregularities. These Medical Tactile Examiners (MTEs) conduct a 30 to 40 minute screening, using braille medical tapes to detect lumps, even those as small as 6 to 8 mm, with accuracy. The idea of MTEs was developed by Dr Frank Hoffman, a Germany-based gynaecologist, whose organization Discovering Hands partners with NABCBW in India to impart training. Access to breast screenings in India is restricted by age, high costs of tests, and lack of well-equipped facilities and awareness. Mammographies in India are conducted only at the behest of a doctor and for women above 40. An MTE bridges this gap. Says Shalini Khanna Sodhi, a social activist and Founder-Director of the NABCBW, 18 MTEs have been trained in India since 2017, and have examined over 2,500 women in camps and 3,000 in hospitals across Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai and more. Eight MTEs are to&nbsp;graduate this year. India has 9.2 million visually impaired people, 53 per cent of which are women. This initiative goes a long way towards allowing those with sight disability to gain dignity and independence through gainful employment.</p>

<p><strong>A Win for Indigenous Rangers</strong></p>
<p><strong>ENVIRONMENT</strong> In a region of Australia where few Indigenous rangers are women, the Queensland Indigenous Women&rsquo;s Ranger Network (QIWRN) is proof that female Indigenous rangers can succeed in a male-dominated field. Created in 2018, the initiative combines ancient knowledge with modern tools to monitor forest fires, land degradation and the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). It also provides a forum for female rangers to share experiences and ideas. To date, QIWRN has trained more than 60 women. And the initiative is getting noticed: Last December, Prince William and David Attenborough&rsquo;s Earthshot Prize awarded $1.6 million to QIWRN for its work in protecting the GBR.</p>

<p><strong>ANIMALS</strong> Urbanization has led to 79 per cent decline in India&rsquo;s bird population. In response, brothers Amit and Abhishek Jain developed the Vidyasagar Jeev Daya Parivar Trust, an ambulance service that acts as a safe haven for injured birds, rescuing and rehabilitating them with supplies, nourishment and shelter. Since their inception in 2018, the duo has harnessed a network of 600 active members and expanded their reach to neighbouring regions like Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Sahibabad, etc. This initiative has saved the lives of over 1500 birds so far.</p>

Even better? It uses 95 per cent less water than traditional farms&mdash;and no pesticides are required. All told, ECO 1 can churn out more than one million kilograms of produce every year, and it might just make reliance on food imports a thing of the past in Dubai.</p>
