People often ask me what the best thing about this job is, and the answer is: "All the free stuff." Obviously. But the worst thing about the job is that said stuff has to go back at some point. Ironically, the second worst thing is that some of the stuff doesn't go back. It accumulates, until one day you realise you can't get into your spare room, and that you now have 200 pairs of headphones and a vacuum cleaner for every room of the house. During lockdown, my home was like Del Boy's flat in Only Fools and Horses.
Anyway, back to the 'sending the stuff back' element of this job. I have come to realise over time that the people who make the packaging for tech products are sadistic geniuses, able to warp the fabric of reality itself, using perhaps quantum physics, or the powers of witchcraft, derived from their worship of Satan, the Dark Lord.
