For years, Susan Hughes and Anna Bonner were inseparable.
The pair first became friends in 1999, when they worked as carers at the same assisted living complex.
Seeing Anna's long blonde hair getting in her way as she served food to the residents, Susan offered her a hair tie.
The women got chatting.
Anna told Susan about her difficult upbringing.
Being from a close family herself, Susan felt sorry for Anna and took her under her wing.
Becoming best friends, they shared an apartment, went on holidays together and loved to go clubbing.
On one night out, Susan got chatting to a handsome bouncer named Ste.
‘Ooh, he’s quite cute and got a nice bum, cheeky smile,’ Susan recalled saying, on This Morning.
Susan couldn’t believe her luck when Anna told her Ste was her uncle.
Susan would see him most weeks, but it was nothing more than a flirty friendship.
After a few years, Susan moved back in with her parents to save money, but remained close to Anna.
When Anna got married in 2001, Susan was her bridesmaid.
While Anna was away on honeymoon, Susan took care of her house.
And when Anna went on to have three children, Susan helped with childcare. Susan’s dad, John, thought Anna took advantage of her. But kind-hearted and generous
Susan would do anything for those she loved.
In 2011, when Susan was training as a psychiatric nurse, she got a phone call out of the blue.
