Blessing Awodibu is one of the most exciting new pros to come along in years. After first establishing himself as a social media star on Instagram and YouTube, his pro debut in the spring of 2021 was the most highly anticipated in some time. Things didn't go his way at either the Indy Pro or New York Pro, but The Boogieman redeemed himself by returning to both events this past spring and nabbing back-to-back wins. I spoke with him about his recent trip to Nigeria after 20 years away, the meteoric rise of his friend and fellow countryman Andrew Jacked, and why this year's Mr. Olympia could very well be the best one ever.
I want to start by talking about your recent trip back to your homeland of Nigeria, which you had not been back to since you left 20 years ago at age 10. What was the experience like?
It was so special. It was a surprise visit for my parents. They didn't know I was coming. It was very emotional. I cried a lot and they did too, my parents and my brothers. I knew the trip would be busy, so I allocated the first three days just to spend with them and reconnect. For the first time, I truly understood the meaning of that phrase, "there's no place like home." After that, it was a media tour. For the first interview, I went on a news channel in Lagos and did a live interview talking about bodybuilding and my story, going from Nigeria to Ireland and then the USA, and making it to the Mr. Olympia this year; and of course, my coming there back home after 20 years. They found it very interesting. We had a lot of fun. As soon as it aired, my phone started buzzing like crazy. Every news channel wanted me on. I even had a press conference with a big Boogieman backdrop behind me and a crowd of reporters from TV, radio, and newspapers. It was a blast. I was only supposed to be in Nigeria for one week, but I ended up staying two weeks because I was so busy.

It seems like a decade has passed since the pandemic began in 2020. That was a chaotic year for all of us. MD sent me to Atlanta to cover the Chicago Pro, because restrictions in Illinois made it impossible to hold Tim Gardner's annual extravaganza there. The athletes still showed up in force to compete, and the Classic Physique division alone featured 30 men. When they came out to be adjudicated, one man stood out in a flash as the one to beat. I had never heard of Bryan Jones until that point aside from a vague recollection that he'd won the USA a couple of years before. With his braided and colored hair piled on top of his head in a gathered bun with the ends appearing to be some type of bizarre plant, I dubbed him \"The Kai Greene of Classic.\" That didn't stick, thankfully, because Bryan \"Lord\" Jones is a unique athlete in his own right. I knew I was looking at a man who was going to make waves in that division. A few months later he did just that, placing fifth in his first Olympia appearance. But we only saw him twice more after that, at the Arnold Classic and once again at the Olympia at the end of 2021. Since then, Jones has been working hard to build the additional size needed to successfully transition to the Open category. I spoke with him about his brief but notable time in Classic, and how he plans to make a big splash in Open.
