Percussionist takes BBC Young Musician 2022 crown
Jordan Ashman hits the heights

For the second time in a row, a percussionist has emerged victorious in the BBC Young Musician competition. Eighteen-year-old Jordan Ashman from Milton, Cambridgeshire, took the title in a thrilling Grand Final at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, and in doing so follows in the footsteps of Fang Zhang, who won the coveted trophy in 2020.

For his performance in the final with the BBC Philharmonic and conductor Mark Wigglesworth, Ashman played Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto, a work that was written by the American composer for Colin Currie in 2005 and features a wide range of instruments, including drums, marimba, vibraphone, chimes and cymbals. ‘I am really excited to showcase what I and all the different percussion instruments can do,’ he said after his performance, ‘and I hope that I have greatly increased people’s understanding of percussion and that they can see how vibrant, virtuosic, expressive and dynamic the percussion can be.’
