"I promise you will never stop saying your name".
These are ten words that mean the absolute world to We Came As Romans.
First and foremost, they are the last ten words uttered on 'Promise You', the last song on the band's new album, a collection of songs that have been five years in the making and at one point may not have even been on the cards at all. They are ten words that serve as a permanent vow to their departed bandmate, friend and brother Kyle Pavone, a direct response to the declarations that he personally made on the band's 2017 track 'Promise Me'.
They are also ten words that finish off the starkest, rawest and most emotionally devastating account of Kyle's final days before his passing in 2018. These ten words have taken We Came As Romans to the depths and back again, just to be able to say them aloud.
"When we wrote 'Promise Me', Kyle told me all of these things that he wanted to sing and talk about and asked how I could put them into this song for him. And it served as his promise to us," guitarist Joshua Moore states, remembering the conversation he had with Kyle about what he was going through at the time.
"So, 'Promise You' is our promise to him that we'll keep on saying his name and never forget him, ever."
It's taken a long time for We Came As Romans to get to this place. To a point where they are ready to talk about the last five years of their lives and the things that they have been through. But at the same time, the thing at the centre of it all is still music. Be it discussing whether they even continue with the band without Kyle as a part of it, or figuring out how to write music that has him in mind without him actually being here, a lot of pain, heartache and uncertainty has circled around them.
