What world did I bring you into?'
This is a question that Dan Campbell found himself asking himself as his son Wyatt turned one, a month into the COVID-19 pandemic at the beginning of 2020.
It's a question he continued to ask himself as the months rolled on, as isolation bled into terrifying climate disasters, divisive political unrest, heartbreaking gun violence and everything between.
He was meeting himself at a crossroads, navigating a world slowly unfurling before him as well as being a first-time parent and not knowing when his band, The Wonder Years, would be able to play a show again. Let alone be able to write music again together.
"You would wake up in the morning, and there would be a moment where you would forget," he remembers.
"Then as you start to come to, you go, 'Oh yeah, everything is fucking awful'. The urge is to go back to sleep and just wait it out that bit longer. But you can't because Wyatt doesn't know that things are awful. He wants to eat breakfast and play.
"We had to set out and build this smaller world for him and us to exist in, which was really cool. We built this garden box where we could go and work on it every day and in which we grew sunflowers in. We took walks around the neighbourhood because it's all he wanted to do after learning that he could."
He smiles.
