વિજયનગર રાજ્યના રાજા કૃષ્ણદેવરાય પાસે શ્રેષ્ઠ ઓલાદના ઘણા ઘોડા હતા. એક દિવસ એક માણસે આવીને કહ્યું કે એની પાસે ઉત્તમ નસલના અરબી ઘોડા વેચવાના છે. પોતાની પાસે આવો એક અશ્વ હતો એ એણે રાજાને બતાવ્યો.
રાજાને એ અશ્વ ગમી ગયો આથી બીજા એવા જેટલા ઘોડા હોય એ ખરીદી લેવાની તૈયારી બતાવી. પેલા માણસે સાથે લાવેલો ઘોડો રાજાને આપીને બાકીના અશ્વ બે દિવસ પછી લાવવાનું વચન આપ્યું. રાજાએ એને ઍડ્વાન્સ-આગોતરી રકમ પેટે પાંચ હજાર સોનામહોર આપી. બે દિવસ પસાર થઈ ગયા, બે અઠવાડિયાં વીતી ગયાં, પણ પેલા માણસના કોઈ વાવડ નહોતા. રાજાની બેચેની વધતી જતી હતી. એક સાંજે રાજા તાણમુક્ત થવા પોતાના મહેલની પાછળ આવેલા બગીચામાં લટાર મારવા ગયા. ત્યાં એમણે તેનાલી રામનને એક કાગળ પર કશુંક લખતાં જોયો. રાજાએ એ લખાણ વિશે પૂછતાં એ કહેઃ &lsquo;વિજયનગર રાજ્યના મૂર્ખ લોકોની એક યાદી હું બનાવી રહ્યો છું.'
રાજાએ તેનાલી પાસેથી એ કાગળ લીધો ને યાદીમાં નામ જોયાં તો સૌથી ટોચ પર રાજાનું જ નામ હતું. રાજાએ ગુસ્સે થઈને એનું કારણ પૂછતાં તેનાલી રામન કહેઃ &lsquo;સાવ અજાણ્યા માણસને સાવ એમ જ પાંચ હજાર સોનામહોર આપી દેવી એ મોટી મૂર્ખામી નહીં તો બીજું શું કહેવાય?!&rsquo;
રાજા કહેઃ &lsquo;સમજો એ માણસ ઘોડા લઈને આવે તો?&rsquo;
તેનાલી રામન કહેઃ &lsquo;...તો તમારા બદલે સૌથી ટોચ પર હું એનું નામ લખું.&rsquo;
કોઈ વ્યક્તિ સાથે કામધંધો, વ્યવસાય કે અન્ય વ્યવહાર કરીએ ત્યારે એ વ્યક્તિ અજાણી હોય તો એના પર આંધળો ભરોસો કરવાથી પસ્તાવાનો વારો આવે.
