The former Wrexham man received his marching orders on 56 minutes following an innocuous clash with referee Paul Marsden on the edge of the penalty area.
Not knowing Summerfield was jogging towards him from behind, Marsden collided with the FC Halifax player after raising his arm to signal a throw-in.
Summerfield, in a spurof-the-moment act of self-defence, lifted his arm to cover his face, catching the referee in the process.
Marsden then brandished a straight red card to Summerfield to the bewilderment of everyone at The Shay.
Up until that point, Southend, bottom of the table owing to their points deduction but level with the Shaymen on league points won, enjoyed the better of it.
