Gujarat witnessed a surge in the tourism sector during 2023-24, with over 18.59 crore tourists visiting the state. This marks a significant 24.07% increase from the previous year's 14.98 crore tourists. The data was shared by stated tourism minister Mulu Bera ahead of the World Tourism Day on September 27. Of the total visitors, 17.5 crore were domestic tourists, while 23.43 lakh were international visitors. Among these, over 11.38 crore visited for a day, while 7.21 crore chose to stay overnight.The state continues to be a popular destination for spiritual tourism, with the Ambaji Temple recording the highest footfall, attracting 1.65 crore devotees. Somnath Temple, the first Jyotirlinga in India, welcomed 97.93 lakh visitors, followed by Dwarka with 83.54 lakh, and the Mahakali Temple in Pavagadh with 76.66 lakh visitors.Business tourism also contributed significantly to the numbers, with Ahmedabad attracting 2.26 crore visitors. Other major business hubs included Surat 62.31 lakh, Vadodara 34.15 lakh, Rajkot 18.59 lakh, and Bharuch 17.72 lakh, which collectively saw 3.58 crore business tourists.The state's leisure and heritage sites also drew substantial attention. Iconic locations such as Ahmedabad's Kankaria Lakefront and Sabarmati Riverfront as well as the Statue of Unity attracted a total of 22.49 lakh tourists.The state government has also introduced new tourist destinations, including Border Tourism at Nadabet, the Sea Border Viewing Project at Sir Creek in Kutch, the Dinosaur Fossil Park in Balasinor and the Wetland at Mokarsagar in Porbandar.
