The Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad is facing serious issues as banned items keep finding their way inside. During a routine check, a tempo and a truck, meant to collect scrap from the jail premises, were caught attempting to smuggle in banned items. Authorities discovered a hidden phone, tobacco and gutka packets in the tempo's cabin. The drivers, Vikram Dabhi and Sitaram Jhala, were detained for questioning. Another driver, Mehbub Asif TD, and his accomplice were arrested. Further searches of the truck revealed presence of more tobacco products and other banned items.Interestingly, the vehicles had been cleared for entry at the main gate, where the jailor, Harshad Parmar, was on duty. However, the prohibited items were discovered later, raising concerns about the reliability of staff at the gate and indications of involvement of insiders.The Ranip police have registered a case against the four persons—Dabhi, Jhala, Mehbub and Mohammad Hanif Musapatha—and are investigating the matter further.
