Even as women break the glass ceiling in various fields, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) still practices discrimination against women candidates in its latest recruitment for the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AF&ES).
Under pressure from the Gujarat High Court to address the vacancies in municipal and state fire services, especially after the TRP Game Zone tragedy in Rajkot, the AMC issued an advertisement on Monday to recruit three Station Officers, ten Sub Officers and 102 Firemen. However, the advertisement specified that the post of firemen was "only for male candidates." When questioned, senior officers of the Fire Services could not explain why the AMC's Central Office imposed this gender-based restriction.
