The AMC's ambitious project to provide Economically Weaker Section (EWS) housing to the displaced Riverfront people in Vatva has failed to serve its purpose as no houses have been allocated in the past 12 years since it came into existence. Moreover, the corporation has now demolished 1,664 houses of the 1,888 houses constructed under the phase-5, following a structural stability report that indicated the buildings were unsafe.<p>The EWS housing project came into being in six phases at a cost of Rs 182 crore. Deputy Commissioner Riddhesh Raval said, "The demolition was initiated in the phase-5 where 1,888 houses were constructed at a cost of Rs 55.20 crore in 2014. Of these, 1,664 houses have been demolished, while 224 are still occupied." He said, "We received information that one of the blocks had tilted, leading to the demolition of the block to prevent any potential disaster." Ahmedabad Mayor Pratibha Jain said, "Media reports brought to our notice the dilapidated condition of these EWS houses in Vatva. As a result, we have decided to demolish the dilapidated blocks."</p><p>However, the Opposition, led by Shehzad Khan Pathan, along with Shailesh Parmar and residents of the EWS housing scheme, have called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the demolition. Pathan criticized the corporation for constructing low-quality infrastructure, not only in the EWS housing scheme but also in other projects like the Hatkeshwar Bridge. "A building constructed by a private builder has a life expectancy of over 40 years. However, the EWS housing scheme built by the AMC has deteriorated in just 12 years which has led to the demolition. What quality of materials was used to construct these houses which cost Rs 182 crore?" Pathan questioned. Pathan has also demanded a CBI probe into the delays in house allotment, the quality of materials used in construction, and the waste of crores of rupees of public funds on these failed schemes.</p>
