A convict who committed a murder in the United Kingdom will serve the remainder of his sentence in the Lajpore jail in Surat. Under a prisoner transfer agreement between India and the UK, convict Jigu Sorathi has been moved to Surat jail after spending four years in a UK prison.Sorathi had brutally murdered his fiancée, 21-year-old Bhavini, in 2020 by stabbing her multiple times. The Leicester court in the UK sentenced him to life imprisonment, equivalent to 28 years. After his family requested a transfer to an Indian jail, the process was initiated under the agreement between the two countries.Following all legal formalities, British officials escorted Sorathi to Delhi airport, where Indian authorities, including Surat police, took custody of him. The transfer was carefully documented, and the handover was recorded on video. Surat police commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot described this as a historic case as it was the first legal transfer of a prisoner under this agreement.Jigu and Bhavini had been living in the UK since 2017. They planned to have a formal wedding but it was called off due to differences. Enraged by her decision, Jigu attacked her with a knife, killing her in anger.
