A month after the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of the NMC criticised medical colleges across India for not meeting the Minimum Standard Requirements (MSR) to run their institutions, the Gujarat government on 15 June announced another round of recruitment for Class-I doctors on an 11-month contractual basis.
Vacancies have risen to 532 doctors, 34% of the total sanctioned strength of 1,554 Class-I doctors in the six biggest government medical colleges (GMCs) and their attached civil hospitals. The state, however, remains firm in its stance to not hire ad hoc doctors through the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC), but to go for short-term hiring.
Increasing vacancies
Notably, the number of vacancies in the six GMCs has increased since September 2023, when there were 363 vacancies compared to the 532 posts advertised by the health department in June 2024.
