With a view to curbing food adulteration during the upcoming Diwali festivities, the Gujarat Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted 115 surprise raids across the state during the Food Safety Fortnight from October 3 to October 27. The agency seized around 226 tonnes of food products worth Rs 6.3 crore. The raid cracked down on traders involved in producing or selling suspicious food items. The FDA collected 8,246 food samples during the fortnight, conducting over 3,987 inspections. Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said: "The state government will not tolerate any compromises with the public health, and will take strict action against adulterators." In addition, the FDA also destroyed 8,728 kilograms of food products, hazardous for consumption, worth Rs 1.37 crore. The FDA also organised awareness programmes at 200 schools and conducted over 1,000 training sessions with 16,000 traders. More than 8.5 lakh people were educated about food safety.
