Days after launching it, the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) pressed the pause button on its online MBA programme, thanks to lukewarm response. The lack of enthusiasm is being attributed to the timing of the launch—admissions were opened in November by when academics were already underway elsewhere. Officials in the know of the development said that the UGC had given GTU the permission to start an online MBA in October this year with 180 students in a batch. Following this, the varsity decided to open the admissions for its first online MBA programme in November.GTU opened its portal on November 6 but was forced to close the registration on the website in just a few days instead of November 14. "Academics have started at every university in June and July and we received only a handful of applications. We were also advised that November will not be a good time to start the new online MBA programme. Also, online programme admissions have to be conducted twice a year—January and September," said registrar KN Kher. He said that they will launch an online MBA from January."We will also try to hold multiple batches as the course is meant for professionals and distance learning enthusiasts. We will invite applications in January again," he said.
